Home and Healing: Buster’s First Post-Op Update
We are so incredibly relieved that Buster is home and recovery is underway!
His surgeon let us know that the amputation procedure went exactly as planned, and because his vitals were strong and he recovered well from the anesthesia, we were able to bring out bestest boy home the very same day. Walking out of the clinic with him in our arms was a huge relief and one of the best feelings in the world!
Navigating the First 24 Hours: The first day at home took a little bit of teamwork. Buster was understandably groggy and needed quite a bit of gentle encouragement to take his first sips of water and bites of food. But once the anesthesia was fully out of his system (about 24 hours), his famous appetite returned! Since then, he’s been enthusiastically eating and drinking, fueling his body for the healing journey ahead.
Small Steps, Big Milestones: Learning to navigate life as a member of the Tri-Kitty Club is a process, and Buster is already proving how resilient he is. He has successfully urinated twice now — it takes some extra effort and patience for him to get his balance and position just right, but he’s not discouraged and neither are we! Even more amazing? He’s already started walking in short spurts! He’s walked about 3 feet a handful of times all on his own before nesting back down to rest.
Resting Under the Stars: Buster is currently on Gabapentin to manage his post-op pain, which means he’s sleeping quite a lot right now. But when he’s awake, his eyes are bright and his purrs are strong! Despite the initial recovery area set up not working as planned, a quick rearrange and Buster settled right into his low-profile suite where he can rest comfortably safe from any climbing and jumping lures.
Thank you to everyone in Buster’s constellation who sent love, prayers, and “twinkles” this week to get us through surgery day! Your light guided him through and back home to us!
With full hearts and loud purrs,
Erin, Jacob, Buster, Binx, Melody Malone, and Julius
