Buster’s Research Library

We believe in making decisions based on the latest veterinary science. To help us navigate Buster’s path, we’ve looked into leading experts in feline oncology. If you’d like to learn more about the treatments we’ve chosen, here are the resources that helped guide us.

On Immunotherapy:

“Generally, these procedures resulted in minimal or no adverse side effects, and treated animals often showed significant improvements, such as enhanced quality of life, delayed or suppressed tumor recurrence or metastasis, and increased survival times.”

On Amputation & Quality of Life:

“Owners reported a positive satisfaction when considering complications, recovery outcome, and expectations.”

On IHC Results & Diagnostics:

“[T]here are no defined prognostic features for feline nonocular melanocytic neoplasms, making provision of prognostic information, as well as guiding treatment options, challenging to both the pathologist and clinician.”

On Melanocytic Neoplasia & Prognosis:

“Survival of all cats ranged from 4 days to >2022 days, with a median survival time of 427 days. Of the 80 cats with follow-up data, 42 (52.5%) were euthanized or died of causes perceived to be related to their melanocytic neoplasia, with a median survival of 244 days…Median survival time of cats with melanocytic neoplasia arising in the skin or digit was not reached, with 15 of 51 (29.4%) undergoing tumor-related death. Mean estimated survival was 1406 days.”

On Treatment Options & Outcomes:

“The elective therapy for feline melanoma remains complete surgical excision. In the study by Chamel et al., (2016), cats undergoing surgery survived significantly longer than those receiving no treatment or medical treatment only.” - Sabattini et al. (2018)

“Cats treated by surgery survived significantly longer than others…Surgery is of clinical benefit and wide surgical excision of tumours should be recommended first for local control.” - Chamel (2017)
